This Curiosity Collection extends the learning from the Ancient Worlds and Lost Civilisations Curiosity Snapshot through a cross-curriculum exploration of ancient civilisations using history, geography, archaeology, science, mathematics, English, design, creativity, and inquiry.
Learners investigate how geography influenced where civilisations developed, explore the importance of rivers, discover how ancient people communicated through writing and oral traditions, examine inventions and technologies, investigate ancient engineering, and explore beliefs, sacred places, trade networks, and cultural exchange. They discover how ancient engineers used observation, measurement, materials, mathematics, and creative problem-solving to design structures that continue to inspire people today. Along the way, learners explore how many ideas from ancient civilisations continue to shape the modern world and how many Indigenous cultures, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in Australia and First Nations Peoples around the world, continue to practise and share their cultures, languages, traditions, and knowledge today.
Throughout the Collection, Wonder Seekers build their understanding of how ancient societies adapted to different environments, solved problems, shared knowledge, and connected with one another. They explore maps, timelines, historical evidence, artefacts, engineering achievements, and cultural traditions before bringing their discoveries together in a creative Ancient Civilisation Expo project.
Along the way, learners develop skills in observation, questioning, historical inquiry, geographical thinking, comparing evidence, interpreting maps and timelines, measuring and comparing structures, recognising continuity and change, engineering design, critical and creative thinking, communication, and respectful intercultural understanding.
Each Collection is designed using inclusive learning principles, supporting diverse learning needs through self-paced exploration, clear instructions, flexible activity options, visual supports, and multiple ways for learners to engage, create, and reflect.
